my AM skincare routine

my AM skincare routine

Well guys, we’re in the midst of a pandemic and it seems like all signs of normalcy have been flushed right down the shitter. Beauty blogging feels pretty trivial at the moment but in the spirit of some levity, I fought my 6 year old for MY laptop to write this for all of you. Here’s the deal… my hair is a disgrace with roots down to my ears and patches of grays sprouting up like corn cobs. My thighs scream each time they are squeezed into my once baggy sweats (ok pj pants)… and don’t even get me started on my nails. There is one blessed thing that I have sworn a solemn oath to, however, and that is my skincare routine. I didn’t want to flood my dear compatriots with too much beauty advice all at once so I wrote firstly about my morning regimen… which nowadays has transformed into a noonish, early afternoon ritual.

  • FACE WASH- for the love of all things holy…. wash your damn face and then wash it again. People (and by people I’m talking about those men or women who could smear Crisco all over their faces and still not have a breakout the next day) argue that this step is an unnecessary one. Their logic is that a face should be clean from the night prior. My question to them is… what about all that residue from hair, products, allergens etc. that slopped off onto the pillowcase while catching some Zzzzzs and is now taking up residence on our most precious skin? Don’t take any chances and give your face a stellar lathering in the morning. At the very least, it will wake your ass up and prep it for the next skincare steps. Here are my two faves: Drunk Elephant’s Jelly Cleanser and Ole Henriksen’s Face The Truth Cleanser.

  • VITAMIN C- Vitamin C boosts something called “collagen synthesis” in the skin which slows down aging and is one ingredient I’ve read (over and over and over again) that dermatologists agree actually works. It softens wrinkles and fine lines and can actually prevent those mother-fers from forming in the first place. I never ever, ever, EVER begin my day without my vitamin C. The three that I absolutely covet are: Drunk Elephant’s C Firma and Skinceuticals C E Ferulic. After you’ve washed your face, apply and rub in the C Serum of your choice. Wait for it to dry (usually one to two minutes) and then follow with a moisturizer and spf and just feel those cells regenerating!

  • Moisturizer- I mean, DUH right? But there are so many moisturizers out there that this step can be a MIS step if you’re not careful. For the morning time, I tend to lean towards a lighter moisturizer. My top pick is Belif’s Milky Hydra Balancing Moisturizer. It is a no frills product but it’s clean, it never clogs my pores, it’s perfect for sensitive skin and gives me plenty of hydration without making me look or feel greasy. And it absorbs really well into skin. This is a no-brainer and it’s affordable enough to justify repeatedly buying it. This moisturizer is most definitely one I recommend the most because it suits all skin types and I’m confident it will never disappoint.

  • EYE CREAM- I’m going to make this super uncomplicated: I don’t choose MORNING eye creams that promise to have firming or anti-aging properties… I save those super powers for night time. I opt for simpler ones that hydrate and brighten. A little pop of shine added to the occipital bone can really wow the masses, and by wowing the masses I mean, my eye glow goes to complete waste on my husband and children. I love Ole Henriksen’s Banana Bright Eye Cream (am I sounding like a broken record yet?), I also love Origins Ginzing eye cream and the Tula Skincare Glow Hour Stick because both are instantly brightening and the Tula Stick is also cooling which majorly combats eye puffiness post binge drinking during quarantine.

  • SPF- Newsflash friends: Even though summer is not yet here, YOU STILL NEED TO SLATHER ON SUNSCREEN YEAR ROUND. Admittedly, I do pare back slightly with the KIND of SPF I’m using. For instance, I ditch the SPF with titanium dioxide (that takes a sledge hammer to remove) and I replace it with lighter versions such as: the UNSEEN SUNSCREEN from Supergoop and my all time favorite GLOWSCREEN from Supergoop which protects skin AND acts as a primer AND gives skin a major illumination. NOTE: If you are a dude and a dude who likes less steps (so basically all you dudes out there), buy Jack Black’s Double-Duty Face Moisturizer which contains an SPF. It contains blue algae extract, Vitamins A and C to keep skin supple and looking all good for the ladies. Easy Peasy. Women: you can skip using a stand alone SPF if you plan on using a foundation or a tinted moisturizer with it in it. The moral of the story…. this is not the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2015 etc… it’s trendy to take care of your skin, WEAR SUNSCREEN
